Pre-operative rehabilitation focuses on patient’s pre-operative impairments and functional status to establish a baseline for documenting postoperative improvement. It also forms a basis for establishing a rapport the between patient and us for enhanced continuity of care after surgery. Maximizing pre-operative mobility and strength improves post-operative outcomes.
Our post-operative rehabilitation is typically divided into phases, containing goals and suggested interventions for each phase. Phases are identified in several ways: by overlapping phases of tissue healing (acute/subacute/chronic); by the level of difficulty of activities (initial, intermediate, advanced); by the degree of protection of healing tissues (maximum, moderate, minimum protection); or simply by sequential numbering (I, II, III).
Without disregarding the differences among various surgical procedures and the fact that each patient’s recovery after surgery is unique, we provide an individualized rehabilitation program for our patients, with suggested guidelines for each phase which are modified based on their results of ongoing post-operative plan of care. We also maintain a regular communication with the operating surgeon in the best interest of the patient.
